Bethany Helfman, Psy.D., is a licensed Clinical Psychologist in the states of Michigan and New York. She has 15 years of clinical experience providing treatment to adolescents and adults with eating disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders and substance abuse. In her work with eating disorders, she utilizes a team approach, working closely with an internist, registered dietitian and psychiatrist. Dr. Helfman is also trained in the field of geropsychology and the cognitive remediation of traumatic brain injury. She conducts personality, neuropsychological and bariatric assessments. She has served as the clinical supervisor for nealy 30 therapists over the past 9 years. Dr. Helfman is a respected member of the Academy for Eating Disorders, the Eating Disorder League, the American Psychological Association, and the Michigan Psychological Association.
Prior to returning to her home in Michigan, Dr. Helfman spent many years as the Director of Psychology for a multi-borough agency in New York City. She had the honor of developing a caregiver’s group for 911 survivors in New York City through a post-September 11th grant from the New York Times and New York University Hospital.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Helfman believes in advocating or change related to the societal factors that make recovery from mental illness more difficult. She does this by offering talks and lectures to local schools, community centers, professionals and graduate students.
